It features excellent recording quality for podcasts, gamers, vloggers, musicians and anyone else looking for an inexpensive digital mic
What we don’t like:
The plastic body is a little ‘iffy’
There have been a few comments on its poor interface and its low bit-depth
Shure has been in the audio business for the longest time ever, maintaining an excellent reputation for their quality and innovation to this day. The Shure MV5 Digital Condenser microphone is a very cool looking little device and there are a lot of things we like about it, which is why it comes highly recommended.
We have a few guys on our review panel who have their own YouTube channels and podcasts and the majority use the Shure MV5 digital condenser microphone. It reminds us of the cool retro microphones Elvis and the other crooners used back in the day except that it’s completely digital and is compatible with Mac, iPad, iOS, iPhone, Windows, and Android.
We also like that it’s very portable and pretty much a plug and play for those of you always on the go. However, we do need to mention, that while the Shure MV5 is close to perfect it does fall a little short in the clarity department when compared to the more expensive mics, but trust us, it’s not hugely noticeable and definitely isn’t a dealbreaker.
The Techs and Specs
If you dabble in audio recording, as in you need a mic that offers good quality, but you don’t want to spend a fortune then we recommend the Shure MV5.
Let’s face it, we’re not all sound engineers or audio experts and most of us don’t really feel like taking online courses to figure out how a USB mic works, which is why the Shure MV5 condenser mic is a winner. Even if you’re an absolute microphobe you’ll feel comfortable with this nifty little gadget as soon as you remove it from its packaging and you can have it plugged in and working in under 2 minutes, with the hardest part being downloading Audacity, which is free. What this means is no stressing about how to get the mic working, freeing you up to rather concentrate on your content.
The ShurePlus MOTIV Recording App
What sets the MV5 apart from other USB mics is the ShurePlus MOTIV Mobile Recording App, which lets you use it without a PC, laptop or a Mac. All you have to do is download it from the App store, connect your mic to your iPhone using the lightning connector and you’re able to start recording straight away. This smart app is nothing short of amazing when it comes to the mic’s functionality: it can control its sensitivity, you’re able to monitor the recording levels and there are two presets – one for the speech and the other specially designed for instruments. Over and above that, you can set it yourself depending on where, how or what you want to record.
Using MOTIV you can change DSP modes, select formats and save your recordings as videos on your phone’s camera roll, turning your iPad or iPhone into a mobile studio.
You can also:
Apply a limiter to stop any clipping
Apply compression for consistent volume
Reduce/boost frequencies with EQ interface
If we were to give three reasons as to why you should get your hands on the Shure MV5 they would be:
Unlike some mics, the MV5 works with any device, from Android and iOS to Mac and Windows, and you get excellent sound quality even on your iPhone or iPad.
It needs very little setting up, and without doing too much, the recording quality is very good which means it’s perfect if you’re a vlogger or interview people on the go.
In terms of value for money and sleek design, you’re not going to find a better mic within this particular price range.
Whatever you need a USB mic for, whether it’s live streaming, on-the-go interviews, skype calls, conference calls or group chats you can rest aSHUREd with the MV5 condenser microphone.
